CAA President Stephen Oundo emphasizes architects' role in shaping inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable built environments

On World Architecture Day, the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sustainable urbanization and climate action across the Commonwealth, with a particular focus on rapidly urbanizing low-income countries.

Stephen Oundo, President of the Commonwealth Association of Architects, addressed fellow architects, colleagues and friends across the Commonwealth, stating:

“On this World Architecture Day, we celebrate the role of architects in our profession in shaping inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable built environments. The theme this year is not only a reminder of our responsibilities, but also an opportunity to reflect on the strategic priorities that guide the Commonwealth Association of Architects in our journey.”

Oundo emphasised the fundamental importance of architecture in daily life: “Architecture matters. Every street, every school, every public space influences the way we live, work and connect. CAA is committed to supporting leaders to make better evidence-based decisions on built environment issues, strengthening the links between academia, practitioners and policymakers.”

Focus on Secondary Cities and Public Sector

The CAA President highlighted that the greatest challenges and opportunities are often in rapidly urbanising low-income countries, especially in secondary cities and in the public sector, remarking “Here the need is for knowledge, skills and scalable solutions. Through partnerships, coalitions of architectural faculties and collaborations across disciplines, CAA is committed to address these gaps and helping to identify projects that can deliver impact at scale.”

Climate Crisis at the Forefront

Addressing the climate emergency, Oundo stated: “Buildings and construction are central to climatic crises, but also to its solution. By raising climate literacy among academia, practitioners and policymakers, we can accelerate the transition to a more sustainable and equitable world. Every project, from a family home to a city wide plan, is an opportunity to reduce emissions, conserve resources and restore ecosystems.”

Call to Action

The CAA President directed specific messages to key stakeholders:

  • To academia: “Continue to innovate, share and uphold the highest professional standards. Can we equip the next generation with competencies needed for a fast changing world?”
  • To practitioners and policymakers: “Invest in planning, regulation and design that is quality to our cities that can thrive.”

Oundo concluded: “The Commonwealth Association of Architects exists to maximize contribution of architects to the well-being of society. On this World Architecture Day, let us affirm our collective commitment to advocate with evidence, to build capacity where it is needed most, and to act decisively on climate. Together, let us ensure that the built environment of the Commonwealth is not just a reflection of our values, but a driver of resilience, equity and hope.”
